How Long Do You Have?

The parable of the drops of water. Imagine for a moment that you are sitting in the top seat of a normal sized football stadium. It is 12:00 and you begin to see dark clouds form above. Listening to the radio the weather man warns everyone that this is a storm unlike any other and you need to get out of where ever you are and prepare for the worst. He was right in that this will not be any ordinary rain because every drop of rain that comes down will double in size every minute. So at 12:00 the first single drop of rain falls, the second minute there is two drops, the third minute four drops of rain and so on… 12:15 as the sky darkens and become even more ominous the rain continues to fall in greater amounts. The man on the radio warns now of floods that have occurred from storms in the past and the potential for this one but you have seen rain before and you have never had any problems. Intead, from your seat you see only small puddles of water begin to pool on the field with little concern. It has been raining now for 30 minutes which means the rain drops have doubled 30 times as well. The result still only a very soggy field and some people begin to leave that where around you. From your perspective there is no need for any concern and you still even have hopes that they will play the game. You actually scoff at the fair weather fans leaving and think all of them, along with the guy on the radio, are extremist or alarmist. It is now 12:45 and by this time the field is covered and that is all but it is obvious that the game will be called. The people in the first few rows have already left because of concerns with exceptions of a few diehards. To your surprise the radio is silent now and the people left around you have as little knowledge about what is going on as you do. You need to make the decision now to ride this out or try to leave with everyone else. 12:47 another minute passes and the water begins to fill the first section of the stadium and for the first time you can see the actual tragedies because of this storm and you have your first concerns. You decide you must leave now and begin to push your way to the exit along with the others that stayed behind and imagine you have time left. At 12:49, only 2 minutes later and less than an hour before this storm began that last seat you were sitting in is now under water.

Based on exponential growth this time line is 100% true. Imagine now that we all see dark clouds that have been forming for years. With every dollar of debt it creates more, with every bit of inflation compounds and causes more, every potential violence escalating and creating more panic. You see the rain beginning to fall and the weathermen warning that this could be a storm unlike any thing we have seen before. But don’t worry maybe you have seen this before or maybe you could listen to the others that say that this could never happen here. Imagine where will you be at 12:48?
