Welcome to The KY9/12 Defender

In February of this year, a caller to Glenn Beck's radio program announced feeling alone on the meaning of America and its Constitution and deciding it was futile to attempt to reverse the country's slide towards socialism. Mr. Beck assured the caller that he was not alone, in fact, enough Americans feel the same that "we surround them". He asked the caller to be patient for a short time.

A few weeks later, 142 liked-minded Kentuckians, some friends but most strangers to one other, gathered to watch Glenn Beck's television program announcing the start of The 912 Project. Built upon a foundation of nine principles and twelve values, the non-partisan movement would work to restore the uncommon unity Americans felt on September 12, 2001.

Now, six months later--after tea parties, protests against cap & trade and health care legislation, and joining the historic 912 March on Washington--the Kentucky chapter of The 912 Project introduces our monthly newsletter, The KY9/12 Defender. Regular and rotating features will include: "Call to Action" on issues needed urgent attention, "Events" notices, and "In Honor of a Kentucky Hero", recounting the extraordinary actions of a Kentuckian towards the protection of the commonwealth or nation.

Welcome! We invite you to share your suggestions and opinions at newsletter@ky912.com.

Who is KY9/12

A brief, open ended question can have the same result as an ink blot test: each person has an answer that is indisputable--to them--but unlike any other person's answer. Although members of the KY 9/12 group agree on Glenn Beck's founding nine principles and twelve values, there are many opinions on which actions the group should take in support of those core beliefs. So who is KY 9/12?

Politics

We are non-partisan and believe that both major parties have contributed equally to the country's current problems. At the same time, we don't support a third party alternative as the better solution. Instead, we extend the founding father's championing of the individual citizen and believe that any politician with honor and conviction of principles, regardless of party affiliation, will protect and preserve the Constitution.

Does KY 9/12 then endorse a candidate who we believe will adhere strictly to the Constitution? As an organization, no, but as individual members of the group, yes. With enthusiasm.

KY 9/12 does ask each candidate, incumbent and opposition alike, to sign the "IN or OUT 2010" pledge Glenn Beck introduced several weeks ago ( IN OUT 2010 PLEDGE .) A majority of Americans, after reading the pledge, would be unable to support a candidate who disagreed with its five component statements.

Single Issues

The political philosophy of most KY 9/12 members is rooted in conservative and/or libertarian beliefs. Since the libertarian essence of individual freedom appeals to some social liberals, a parking lot at a KY 9/12 meeting may include bumper stickers for McCAIN or BARR or an anti-establishment sentiment.

With KY 9/12's resolute support for the Constitution and its Bill of Rights, issues like the 2nd Amendment or a simplified tax code are common ground for most members. But the same question arises as we have with political candidates: Does the group have an "official" position on these issues?

While the majority of KY 9/12'ers are strong proponents of an individual's right to own firearms, existing organizations such as the National Rifle Association focus on the 2nd Amendment and disseminate its necessity better than anyone. KY 9/12 is passionate about the Bill of Rights in total, and considers each amendment equally deserving of open discussion and defense.

When federal income tax was created in the early 20th century, tax laws were covered on 14 pages and only 4 forms were available, but Congress after Congress added layer upon layer until, today, tax laws require 70,000 pages and forms now exceed 4,000. As a humorist once said, "The mistakes made by Congress wouldn't be so bad if the next Congress didn't keep trying to correct them." In short, it seems that very few like the tax system. Most KY 9/12 members view the current tax code's focus on redistribution of wealth as socialist in its aim and hope to see the U.S. Congress adopt a more fair method which doesn't penalize production.

KY 9/12 appreciates organizations like Fair Tax and NRA without intending to equal their focus on the single issues each are devoted toward.

So Who is KY 9/12?

We believe personal responsibility is a more diametric opposite to socialism than even capitalism can claim, and that level of responsiblity is the foundation of KY 9/12. The idea began with an average American couple, Eric and Lydia Wilson of Georgetown, deciding to organize a viewing of the Glenn Beck show that unveiled "The 912 Project". The organization grew as others decided on actions and events they could initiate and manage, woven within the founding nine principles and twelve values.

We are dedicated to our mission statement: "Making government smaller and We the People stronger". To that goal, KY 9/12 will continue to grow in several ways: in education on the Constitution and legislative events in Frankfort and Washington D.C.; in our city chapter meetings and their capacity to affect local change; in our ability to bring like-minded people together to let them know that they are not alone.

The grassroots spirit of KY 9/12 is still rooted in personal responsibility--that will never change. As the group evolves, the opportunity for more members to step forward with constructive ideas and assistance will also grow and continue to be the foundation of "The KY 9/12 Project".

KY 9/12 is everyday men and women who have always helped others when asked and now help the nation without being asked. We can use your help now and welcome you to join us.

Meet Drew Piester

Drew and Sarah Piester joined KY 9/12 in August after friends Bill and Sarah Webb spoke about to them about the group's purposes and the September 12 march on Washington DC. "I had the wonderful opportunity to go to D.C. for the 9/12 March, which was such a rewarding experience, and I met a terrific group of people that share similar beliefs," said Drew.

Born in Columbia, Missouri, he served as a military police officer for over 4 years, including one tour of duy in Iraq. After receiving his honorable discharge, Drew returned to Missouri to complete his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration and pursue his artistic interest as a freelance photographer.

This past summer, Drew and Sarah were married and moved to Lexington, where Sarah is working towards her graduate degree at the University of Kentucky. In Lexington, Drew has continued his passion for photography (click here to view some of his work: www.drewpiester.com) and joined the Kentucky State Police. He says, "My wife and I love Kentucky and spend as much of our free time as we can backpacking in the Red River Gorge!"

KY 9/12 is a strong, growing organization due to members like Drew and Sarah Piester. Adds Drew, "Since the trip (to D.C.), we knew that this was something that we would continue to support and would love to be a part of."

In Honor of a Kentucky Hero

Morris E. Crain, Bandana and Paducah

  Awarded Congressional Medal of Honor

Kentucky’s heroes, living and dead, have fought America’s enemies—often to the sacrifice of their own lives—to defend a hope that once drew families to ships and wagons and remains each American's prime necessity: Freedom. Here, in the words of a U.S. Army official Congressional Medal of Honor citation, is a story of courage and devotion from one Kentucky hero: Technical Sergeant Morris Crain.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty on 13 March 1945, while serving with Company E, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action at Haguenau, France. Technical Sergeant Crain led his platoon against powerful German forces during the struggle to enlarge the bridgehead across the Moder River. With great daring and aggressiveness he spearheaded the platoon in killing 10 enemy soldiers, capturing 12 more and securing its objective near an important road junction. Although heavy concentrations of artillery, mortar, and self-propelled gunfire raked the area, he moved about among his men during the day, exhorting them to great efforts and encouraging them to stand firm. He carried ammunition and maintained contact with the company command post, exposing himself to deadly enemy fire. At nightfall the enemy barrage became more intense and tanks entered the fray to cover foot troops while they bombarded our positions with grenades and rockets. As buildings were blasted by the Germans, the Americans fell back from house to house. Technical Sergeant Crain deployed another platoon which had been sent to his support and then rushed through murderous tank and small-arms fire to the foremost house, which was being defended by five of his men. With the enemy attacking from an adjoining room and a tank firing pointblank at the house, he ordered the men to withdraw while he remained in the face of almost certain death to hold the position. Although shells were crashing through the walls and bullets were hitting all around him, he held his ground and with accurate fire from his submachine gun killed three Germans. He was killed when the building was destroyed by the enemy. Technical Sergeant Crain's outstanding valor and intrepid leadership enabled his platoon to organize a new defense, repel the attack and preserve the hard-won bridgehead.

Heroes reveal the very best of themselves in the very worst of circumstances. Let's remember and honor T/Sgt Morris Crain in our thoughts and prayers.

Reports of Obamacare's Death Are Exaggerated
Senate Democrats are closer to cobbling together a
passable bill and Nancy Pelosi continues to push for
"yea" votes in the House. Republicans and moderate
Democrats concede that virtually any legislation will
affect Medicare for seniors and increase taxes. The only
alternative is a deficit that will touch the lunar surface.

Senate Climate Bill; EPA Blocking Coal Permits
Senate Democrats introduced SB 5735, mandating 20% cuts
in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, even deeper than
the 17% cuts in HR 2454 (Waxman-Markey). In a separate
action involving "climate change", the Environmental
Protection Agency continues to block 79 pending coal
mining permits, requiring "enhanced reviews" prior to
their approval. This action threatens high-paying jobs
as well as affordable energy and is arguably intended
to reduce and eventually eliminate the coal industry.

Please contact your Congressman and Senators
McConnell and Bunning to:
(1) express your thoughts on Health Care Restructuring (by
definition, reform must "improve something"), (2) ask that
they pressure the EPA to release the pending mining
permits, (3) voice opposition to future climate change
legislation that will seriously impact U.S. manufacturing
as well as household energy costs.

Quotes for Then, and Now

We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress

overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.

We may not imagine how our lives could be more

Liberty Lessen(ed)

Issued to his country's populace during the 1930’s, this edict was the work of:  (a) Soviet Union Communist Party General Secretary Joseph Stalin, (b) United States President Franklin Roosevelt, or (c) German Chancellor Adolf Hitler?

“All persons are hereby required to deliver on or
      before May 1, 1933, to a (federal bank)...gold coin,
gold bullion and gold certificates now owned by them."

Correct answer below.

Book of the Month Plug

Arguing With Idiots by Glenn ...

Glenn Beck's latest book, Arguing with Idiots, is twelve chapters of facts served up with good natured satire and hilarious illustrations. In a further example of Van Jones' downfall--that a liberal's Achille's heel is often their own words--Glenn has dug up the mother lode for this book. Nuggets include Bill Maher's "Let me be the first to say that I would be thrilled if America's health care system is anywhere near as functional as the post office".

Along with chapters devoted to the 2nd amendment,  energy and the Constitution, Arguing with Idiots has 24 pages of attributions covering each fact listed. When a liberal acquaintance supports health care reform by referencing the "millions of uninsured in the U.S.", a reader can quote the U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services report saying that over half of uninsured are in that category for less than a year as they transition between jobs.

Arguing with Idiots is available at all book retailers. Get a copy soon and take control of the facts.

Answer to "Liberty Lessen(ed)"

Selecting Adolf Hitler or Joseph Stalin, although logical,
was incorrect. On April 5, 1933, FDR signed Executive
Order 6102, essentially confiscating gold stock legally
owned by private citizens. Individuals were reimbursed
at the going exchange rate of about $20 per troy ounce
and small amounts up to $100.00 in value were exempted,
with larger quantities allowed for dentists, artists and
jewelers. Failure to comply was punishable with a fine
up to $10,000 and/or a prison term up to 10 years. Private
ownership of gold remained limited until legislation signed
by Gerald Ford went into effect on December 31, 1974. The
e
conomic justification for gold confiscation and the legal
authority of FDR's order have been debated since it
happened over 75 years ago.
